Information about GLOUCESTER Cradled by the picturesque Cotswold Hills and ideally located in the heart of the country, the city of Gloucester has a vibrant, lively atmosphere that combines a rich historic past with all the excitement of a modern city. The roman city of Gloucester was named Colonia Nerviana Glevensis after the Emperor Nerva. A colonia was the highest status that a Roman provincial town could attain which emphasises its historical importance. It grew rapidly mainly as a result of its being situated beside The River Severn, an important north east/south west transport corridor. Strangely for an inland town, Gloucester boasts a dockland area, which is now home to the National Waterways Museum. Here you can find many working examples of the ships and barges that used to ply their trade on canals and rivers. The nearby Forest of Dean is said to be the inspirational setting of Tolkien�s Lord of the Rings tales. A great many scenes in the Harry Potter films were recorded at Gloucester cathedral. Another visitor attraction is The House of the Tailor of Gloucester, the actual shop that Beatrix Potter used as a model for the Tailor�s home in her famous story �The Tailor of Gloucester�.
